The Birght Birds of Winter

January 28, 2016
Red Bird on Red Berries

The fog has rolled in, the rain is falling, the sky is soggy grey. Splashes of colour – of reds, oranges and yellows – really stand out in this weather. My camera picks up the scarlet of the male Pine Grosbeaks and the soft yellow of the females feeding on red, red Mountain Ash berries; the flaming red crest of a Pileated Woodpecker excavating a hole to get at the hidden ants;and the orange and black of a lone varied thrush feeding on an old apple.

Somehow, even though the temperature has risen, these foggy rainy days seem colder than full-blown snowy days.

Thank heavens for the bright birds of winter!
