Award-winning photo!

January 16, 2016

I have taken several photos of American Dippers over the years and many are posted on this blog and at http://www.sideriusphotos.ca . Last February I participated in the Great Backyard Bird Contest and I entered some of the photos I took while birding in those three days. This photo won third prize in the behaviour category of the Great Backyard Bird Contest (http://gbbc.birdcount.org/2015-behavior-winners/ ).

I am very honoured to have one of my photos recognized – especially since dippers rank up there as one of my very favourite birds. Contrary to what some friends have suggested, however, this dipper is not a headless bird!  It has submerged its head to find the invertebrates that live under the water.  These birds walk, fly and swim underwater; sing in winter, and can even be found nesting under waterfalls.  And almost best of all, you can always count on finding dippers at Kokanee Creek: even on a grey February day.

Congratulations – a beautiful picture and yes, I agree, such an interesting bird. I see them
here in the Coquitlam river. You are an amazing photographer.

    Hi Joanne…

congrats on your 3rd place placing in the photo contest!! Very impressive. Any prize…or is the recognition prize enough?! I will have to take your word for it that that little bird has a head attached to it’s neck.

    See you Wednesday night.
