And a Saw-whet too!

A group of seven or so Steller’s Jays did me a great favour today. They were making a tremendous racket and I was hoping to see an owl when I trudged through the snow to see what all the fuss was about. And sure enough, there it was – a Saw-whet Owl roosting in the dense branches of a small yew tree. The jays were getting right in there trying to reach the small owl, and the owl, obviously agitated, “popped” its bill and kept a close eye on the marauders. Eventually the jays left and the Saw-whet took a last good look at me and slipped into the shrubs beyond. I may look to see if I can see where it is roosting tomorrow, but I think the owl has earned a respite from me today – and certainly from the jays.
