Harlequin Duck at Kokanee Creek

Late summer and fall are wonderful times of the year for many reasons. The colours are outstanding, the weather is golden and pleasant and many birds are moving through the area. Earlier this spring, two Harlequin Ducks were seen at Kokanee Creek Provincial Park. Harlequins had not been spotted in the park since the late ’90’s. Did they nest on the creek this year? No one knows, but this past weekend, I spotted a female Harlequin in the park feeding on Kokanee Salmon eggs, guts and small fish. So far, no young Harlequins have been spotted, but it is a good sign that a female is still in the area!
