Georgia on My Blog: And They Bite!

April 20, 2014

The Georgians I met on my trip were warm, pleasant and polite – with one exception. The European Fire Ants would make terrible neighbours! Originally transported with the earth of plants transplanted from Europe, they are making steady inroads in North America.

The fire ant hills look innocuous enough – just a scruff of bare earth in the red clay earth. But disturb the hill even slightly and watch those little red ants well out of the ground. And they bite! Painfully!

While I would welcome visitors from Georgia to the Kootenays, I would ask the invasive European Fire Ants to stay away.

Looks innocuous, doesn't It?
