Deer Stalker: Cougar Video

February 15, 2014

Cougars are seldom seen – but they are a significant predator of the elk, deer (and the occasional pet) here in the Kootenays. I have found cougar tracks in the snow and along dirt roads but I have only had the one glimpse of a cougar – as it casually crossed a logging road.

Last night, however, my wildlife camera took a short video of a young cougar. The tracks show it was following a deer. Much of the world has lost its large carnivores. I am glad we still have a healthy population of cougars here in the Kootenays. But I am certainly going to watch my dog carefully now when he is outside. He would make a tasty snack for a hungry cougar!
