My Blog – The Photos and Thoughts of a Kootenay biologist
Welcome to my blog – a place where I can share some of the photos that I have taken in the Kootenays near Nelson and some of my thoughts. Who am I? I am a wildlife biologist with a camera and I have lived and worked in the area since 1986. I take my pictures with a telephoto and do not deliberately disturb wildlife for a photo.
What better day to start the blog than the day that the Trumpeter Swans are back on the lake! I was walking with my dog in the cold wind hoping to see the Western Grebes or the Hooded Mergansers that have been around lately. But the water in the smaller ponds is starting to freeze and the ducks have moved into the deeper water. The Bald Eagle was perched across the river and the Canada Geese and various ducks were in the more sheltered deeper water. The four swans were instantly apparent because of their larger size, beautiful white plumage and their voices. The two young were still in their more grey plumage. I have shown some pictures here that I took of the Trumpeter Swans last year. The pictures I took of the swans I saw today were not great – but I will keep going back to see if they come closer to shore.

Thank you, Joanne, for showing some of the beauty (beauties) of the Kootenay area.
There is so much beauty and interesting wildlife here. I am lucky to live here and sharing makes the experience even better. Thanks Dane.

Hi Janny! It would be great to see the wildlife of Friesland too!
