Pine Grosbeaks

December 19, 2012

Pine Grosbeaks add a splash of colour to winter. This year has seen a bumper crop of mountain ash berries. When the pine grosbeaks are feeding on these scarlet berries, you can fill a photo with scarlet. Bears appeared to be feeding on the mountain ash berries more than in previous years too. I am only guessing, of course, but I did see far more bear scat with mountain ash berries than I have in previous years. I like coming upon a group of pine grosbeaks as they are feeding. They have a soft melodic call and let me come close enough to watch for a while.
